Festive champions: steamers

December is a very special month. Suddenly, the smell of cinnamon and lemon wafts through the air, recipe ideas stack up in the kitchen, and while we think ahead to Christmas dinner, our to-do lists grows ever longer. It is a time characterised by a struggle between indulgence and organisation. So it’s all the better when an appliance can do both: free up time and spare your nerves. And what’s more: it can make dinner even better. We are, of course, talking about steamers or steam cookers.

Many people don’t realise it, but a steamer isn’t just an aid for preserving vitamins when preparing vegetables. It’s a culinary strategist, a defender of flavour, and a quiet perfectionist working in the background. And by December at the latest, it transforms into a gift-maker. After all, steaming is not just cooking, but planning, preparing and preserving. It means giving back a sense of calm during the hectic Christmas period. It means respecting ingredients in their natural form and cooking them in a way that retains their colour and flavour. And it means creating little culinary treats that are ideal for preserving and giving away. In other words, a delightful promise in a jar. All without compromising on quality, plus the feeling of achieving a portion of calm at this busy time of year.

Festive planning without festive stress

A steamer makes it possible to prepare many elements of a festive dinner in advance. Red cabbage becomes velvety when cooked in steam rather than boiled down on the stove. Vegetable, poultry or game stocks can be simmered beautifully in a steam cooker, without boiling over. Even apples or pears turn out perfect for sides: soft, flavourful and without caramelised sugar sticking to the bottom of a pan.

Best of all, these treats prepared in advance can easily be preserved after steaming. A steamer can sterilise the jars too and keep the contents bright, fresh and aromatic thanks to gentle preparation. This way, pre-prepared elements for Christmas dinner find their way into the kitchen cupboard, ready for the big day and for weeks afterwards.

Small jars, big effect: homemade presents

Why not give away culinary Christmas treats from the steamer as presents?
These homemade preserves are particularly delicious and make for excellent gifts:

  • Jarred red cabbage – seasonally spiced and perfectly portioned.
  • Homemade stock – given away in little bottles, a favourite for all amateur cooks.
  • Spiced pears or apples poached in red wine – a classic ideally suited to a steam cooker.
  • Apple sauce with cinnamon or vanilla – more exquisite than any shop-bought product, a heartfelt gift.

These preserves are not only nice to look at, they also taste fantastic. And the best thing is: the steam cooker takes care of the work.

Cooked to perfection

When Christmas day comes round, the steamer demonstrates its second strength: precision. Vegetables remain crisp, fish retains its shape, meat becomes juicy and desserts turn out just right every time. Anyone who has made chocolate cake in a steam cooker will know what succulent truly means.

In a nutshell, a steamer is more than just a kitchen appliance. It ensures both reliable results and calm in the kitchen. And this calm is perhaps the best present we can give ourselves in December.

Summary: less stress, more flavour

When it comes to Christmas time, a steam cooker is a helper you only begin to appreciate when you use it. It frees up time, creates flavour and preserves quality. Moreover, it transforms simple ingredients into little culinary highlights that make for fantastic gifts.

  • It’s surprisingly easy to make preserves in a steamer. The steam ensures an even, gentle heat, making a conventional water bath unnecessary. The results are aromatic, durable treats without great effort.

How it works step by step

    1. Prepare the jars

    • Clean the preserving jars thoroughly.
    • Boil the lids or rinse them with hot water separately.
    • Fill the jars up to 2 cm below the brim at most.

    2. Seal properly

    • Firmly screw on the lids, but not too tightly.
    • For clip-top jars: use the rubber ring and clips.

    3. Prepare the steamer

    • Place the jars on a perforated tray or in a steamer basket.
    • Ideally no jar should touch another (this ensures better steam circulation).

    4. Configure the settings

    • Choose steaming at 100°C.
    • The length of time depends on the contents.

    5. Allow to cool

    • Leave the jars in the steamer for a short while so the pressure can equalise.
    • Remove the jars, place them on a kitchen towel and allow to cool completely.
    • Lid test: if the lid can no longer be depressed, the jar is properly sealed.
  • Jarred red cabbage
Perfectly spiced, gently steamed and ideal for poultry and roasts.

    Homemade goose or game stock
Sterilised in the steamer, an exquisite base for sauces.

    Baked apple compote
With cinnamon, vanilla, butter and raisins. Smells like childhood, tastes like Christmas.

    Glazed chestnuts
Gently cooked in steam and preserved in syrup, a festive dream.

    Winter vegetables
Carrots, parsnips, diced pumpkin – perfect as a quick side.

  • Apple chutney with ginger
    Delightful with cheese and raclette.

    Cranberry relish
Sour fruitiness, ideal with game and raclette.

    Mulled wine syrup
The finishing touch for desserts and hot drinks.

    Pears infused with cinnamon
Elegant, long-lasting and a surprisingly delicious side.

Apple sauce with vanilla and ginger
Velvety and aromatic, a luxurious reinterpretation of a classic.
