Guide

The centrepiece of every kitchen

It takes the right technology to cook to perfection. A good hob is the centrepiece of any kitchen. However, choosing the right model requires careful thought. Besides elegant design, modern hobs now boast innovative features, energy efficiency and versatility. But what hob is best-suited to which needs? And what should you keep in mind when buying one? Induction, glass ceramic hob or gas – with or without an integrated extractor hood? Our guide helps you decide and provides valuable tips on planning your kitchen, the technology behind the appliances and convenience for users. We spoke with Loïc Bezençon, Team Leader Service Wester Switzerland at SIBIR.

Mr Bezençon, what is particularly important to bear in mind when buying a new hob?

First of all, the general type of hob: would you like to cook with induction, glass ceramic (Ceran) or gas? Each technology has its pros and cons. The size, operation, special features, design and, of course, energy efficiency are just as important. The available electrical outlet can also play a role. Finding the right model is easy after consulting with SIBIR experts.

What types of hob are there? And how do they differ from each other?

Induction hobs do not heat the cooking surface itself, but generate heat directly in the cookware via electromagnetic fields. This means they provide heat fast, efficiently and right where it’s needed. They’re also safe. That’s because the hob largely remains cool. However, induction hobs therefore require suitable cookware with a magnetisable base. Ideal for anyone who would like to cook quickly and energy-efficiently.

How about glass ceramic hobs (Ceran)?

These work conventionally: heating coils beneath the glass ceramic surface heat up and transfer the heat to the cookware. They are versatile and can be used with almost all kinds of pots and pans. In terms of reaction speed and efficiency, however, they lag behind induction appliances.

How do gas hobs differ?

These are popular among amateur cooks as they produce heat directly and very quickly. Gas hobs are especially suitable for Asian dishes and for cooking with a wok. Important: gas hobs require a gas outlet or gas bottles and they take more effort to clean. However, SIBIR does not offer any gas hobs.

What types of hob does SIBIR offer?

SIBIR has a large range of high-quality hobs – from classic Ceran hobs to modern induction surfaces with a PowerPlus function. Independent models such as the Toptronic appliances offer maximum user convenience directly on the glass ceramic surface. Cooktop variants, by contrast, are controlled via the fitted cooker; they offer a generous cooking area and practical additional features such as a warming zone and residual heat display.

What appliances are best for special requirements in terms of flexibility or robustness, for example?

We recommend hobs with MaxiFlex zones for anyone who likes to cook with pans of different sizes. Thanks to modern sensors, these zones automatically detect the size of the cookware and adjust the heat accordingly. For those who attach particular importance to longevity, the OptiGlass coating is ideal. Whether pushing pans or cleaning, the scratch-resistant surface can even withstand intense use over many years. Apart from that, the reflective glass effect also adds a touch of elegance to the kitchen.

Are there any technical details to bear in mind when installing a hob?

Yes, there certainly are. Before making a purchase, the opening in the worktop should be measured precisely, including the corner radius. The electrical connection is also important. Most hobs need 400V. In the case of induction hobs, sufficiently air supply underneath should also be ensured, especially if an oven is installed beneath the appliance. Our SIBIT technicians are excellently trained and can install the right appliances with ease.

Are there any health considerations in the case of induction hobs?

Most people can use induction hobs carefree. However, people who wear a pacemaker or have an implanted medical device should seek medical advice before installing the appliance to rule out the risk of any potential electromagnetic interference.

Finally: what would your advice be to someone still unsure?

Consult the SIBIR experts for individual advice. There’s a suitable hob for any type of kitchen and requirement. From intuitive controls and energy efficiency to design and special features, SIBIR offers a wide range of models tailored to different needs. Anyone who enjoys cooking will love a powerful induction hob with flexible zones. Those with more classic preferences will be just as happy with a robust Ceran model.

Summary:

A modern hob is more than just a hot surface. It’s a workstation, design piece and a technological marvel – sometimes even an expression of the user’s cooking philosophy. So it’s worth choosing an appliance carefully. Those who opt for a SIBIR hob will enjoy precision, functionality and style in the kitchen, day after day.
