Washing with a clean conscience

One of the most important household appliances is the washing machine. Typically found tucked away under a counter or in the laundry room, it often sees regular use. But what features should you expect from a washing machine today? And which little changes to laundry routines have a big impact on efficiency? Ultimately, users nowadays want to save energy – for both themselves and the environment. SIBIR expert Egzon Sadiku provides some answers.

Mr Sadiku, what is essential to keep in mind when buying a new washing machine?

Energy efficiency is undoubtedly an important topic. The fact that economical washing machines that come with smart programs can't be found in the low-priced segment is understandable. But it’s also the case that the energy costs saved are worth it in the long run.

Does this mean it’s always a good idea to buy a high-quality appliance?

Definitely. Low energy consumption, clean washing results and good spin performance should be guaranteed. However, this does not necessarily mean that only the most expensive appliances are efficient. Our experts have undergone excellent training and can offer good washing machines at fair prices.

Are space requirements a concern when buying a new appliance?

Yes. This aspect should always be considered when purchasing a new home appliance. Especially when there’s only limited space available. There are also washing machines and dryers for the bathroom that are only 45 cm wide and can be loaded from above. In these special locations, advice from our experts will ensure you buy the right appliance.

If there’s already a dryer, should the new washing machine be compatible?

This is very important. If the two appliances are placed on top of each other, they need to fit together perfectly. But they should also fit together if installed next to each other. What’s more, they should have the same load capacity. After all, time can only be saved washing laundry if the capacity is compatible.

How important are each of the programs?

The range of necessary programs depends on the clothes and needs of the customer. These requirements vary across different households. Generally speaking, however, smart washing machines with a choice of different programs are not only gentler with laundry, but also more efficient with energy. Plus, many people today suffer from allergies and expect the washing result to meet a certain standard of quality. Models with special programs for mites and other sources of allergens are therefore highly popular.

Can we expect even more innovation from a washing machine today?

Automatic liquid detergent dosing or a water connection to a rainwater reservoir are examples of innovative features that can satisfy special wishes.

Let’s take a look inside the drum. Are there any users who don’t have a clean conscience?

Indeed, especially those who always use far too much detergent when washing and only put half a load in the drum. This practice not only wastes detergent but also energy. But this is easy to correct.

In other words, it makes sense to reflect on how we use our washing machines?

Absolutely, because washing laundry is a matter of habit. To protect the environment and save money, it’s a good idea to examine our laundry routines and make adjustments where necessary.

How about the choice of program? Eco programs seem to take forever. Don’t they use much more energy?

It’s definitely right to choose an eco program. It might take longer, but it consumes less energy than a short program. That’s because the laundry soaks for longer during the eco program, meaning the appliance requires less energy to remove stains and clean clothes.

And what about the choice of temperature?

You can reduce energy costs by more than 50 percent by washing at a low temperature. This has been calculated.

Why can so much energy be saved using the temperature setting?

Washing machines use up to 90 percent of the energy heating the water. In other words, the higher the temperature, the more energy the appliance needs. Beware, however: although a temperature of 30 degrees is usually enough for clean laundry, a washing cycle at 95 degrees should be planned every two to three weeks. This is important to eliminate germs in the washing machine. You can find more information on this topic in the “Washing machine” guide.
